In some countries and societies around the world, female newborns are disrespected and less favored than males. This custom of considering girls as inferior is not new, rather it has been going on for thousands of years. For centuries, women have been physically and mentally tortured. In the time of jahiliyya, for example, people became unhappy when they heard the news of a newborn girl. Allah mentions this in the Quran,
“And when one of them is informed of the birth of a female, his face becomes dark, …

Being a guy, I have to admit it was kind of weird going to a fiqh class on women. When I was telling my friends about it, they all were very hesitant to come and most didn’t come. I have to say, they made a BIG mistake! This class was one of the most important decisions of my life. Shaykh Waleed Basyouni broke down the complicated fiqh issues of women in a simple and understandable manner. After taking the class, I feel confident in my knowledge of …

Confidential is definitely an amazing, beneficial class that I would recommend for everyone. We spent an entire weekend studying the book of Allah, learning its gems and practicality. It was amazing to see how much depth and knowledge can be learned from Surat’l-Nur. The Surah gives major rulings as well as minor but important rulings. It was really interesting to see some of the transitions in the Surah and the different themes it touches upon. It is a surah packed with a lot of fiqh rulings …

My favorite ayahs in Surat’l-Nur are verses 30 and 31. In these ayahs, Allah (exalted is He) says:
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze, and protect their private parts. That is purer for them. Verily, Allah is All Aware of what you do. And tell the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty…” [Quran, 24:30-31]
These ayahs clarify for the believing men and women how they should behave. There are many benefits of lowering your gaze. One benefit mentioned by Ibn Qayyim …

SubhanAllah, Confidential was an amazing class, as I’ve come to realize that all Al-Maghrib classes are amazing in their own ways. For this class, what I found so subhanAllah walhamdullilah waAllahu akbar-ish was the respect, decency and common courteousness that Muslims afforded one another and that were established in Surat’l-Nur. I read through the Surah only once before the class and I did not pay as much attention to the manners that this surah calls for. Because of this, I did not realize the amount of respect …

Ibadah World Cup

Imagine for a moment you got a pair of tickets to your most favorite sporting event.  Let’s say it is the soccer World Cup!  With great excitement you start making preparations, you book your tickets, you pack your clothes, you leave your home early and you head out on your journey.  Finally, you make it to the arena, and it is pack-filled with people holding their vuvuzelas out ready to go nuts.  The teams come out to the field, they do their introductions, they sing their national anthems.  They are …

It’s the same scenario every year, Ramadan arrives and everything changes. Everywhere you look you see Taqwa (Fear of Allah), Tawbah (Repentance), and All-you-can-eat Lah’ma (Meat). Ramadan went from the Purification month to the free, no-holds-bar, over-eating month. Where’s the Baraqah (Blessing) in this??? There isn’t!
The day prior to, everyone excitedly makes calls congratulating each other for the arrival of Ramadan. Sisters’ look forward to not cooking, Brothers are expected late from the Masjid’, and the youth anticipate reuniting with their ‘Ramadan Crew’. Throughout the day most live a normal …

I met a religious Spanish couple who’d been Muslim for two years. They’re in their early twenties, with three beautiful children. It later broke my heart to find out that the lack of help from the Muslim community forced them into a Christian homeless shelter. Can you imagine? A young Muslim couple with babies, surrounded by drug infested walls?!
“Too often we perceive that we’re in control of our finances. We’re afraid to give too much so not to be financially burdened. Not enough live confidently that Allah will bless, protect, …

1- Have the hunger for success; Never give yourself excuses whether they are legitimate or not. Once you give yourself excuses you have already given up.
2- Set your goals as high as you can! Compete for Jannatul Firdous!
3- Build confidence in yourself and your ability. Think of the confidence of Abdullah Ibn Abbas who became a scholar at such a young age even when his Ansari companion gave up thinking no one will listen to him due to his age.
4- Do the good deeds that you love to do in …
